In the mid-2000s, the Beta Rho Sigma Chapter (aka Sigmas of Charlotte) was determined to change the face of Sigma in Charlotte. This meant improving the reputation of the fraternity by delivering impactful programs and service, surpassing the expectations of the community and always presenting Sigma as group to be reckoned with. One of the key goals was winning the Carolina Stepfes,  a semi-annual alumni step show hosted by the Rho Psi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

In 2005, the Sigmas of Charlotte Step Team failed short of that goal, but put on a show that made the city take notice. In 2007, the same year the chapter hosted the fraternity’s Conclave, the Sigmas of Charlotte won their first championship. The team defended its title in 2009 with one of the best shows many had ever seen.

The AKAs took a hiatus for a couple of years, but resurrected the show in 2013. with little time to prepare and a entirely new team, there was some reserved optimism. However, the new team led by step master Darace (CJ) Barnes brought home our third straight title!
